About This Venue
The Tropical Dome at Mitchell Park Conservatory is an immersive rainforest exhibit featuring over 1,200 plant species housed in a warm, humid environment on Milwaukee's south side.
Step into this urban jungle and experience the wonder of tropical rainforests without leaving Wisconsin. The Tropical Dome recreates the four distinct layers of rainforest ecosystems, from the dimly lit forest floor to the emergent layer, allowing visitors to explore towering palms, vibrant orchids, and exotic flowering plants like bird of paradise and hibiscus. You'll discover the origins of familiar houseplants like philodendrons and ferns, while learning about edible treasures including banana trees, coffee plants, cocoa, and various spice plants that grow in nature.
The exhibit brings the rainforest to life with interactive elements that appeal to all ages, including resident orange bishop weaver birds and koi fish in the pond. The conservatory maintains the warm, humid conditions necessary for the plants to thrive, with plants watered twice daily to mimic the 80-400 inches of annual rainfall these ecosystems receive.
