Downer Woods Natural Area is an 11.1-acre accessible forest preserve managed by UWM's Field Station that offers neighbors and students a chance to experience restored native beech-maple woodland in the Downer Avenue neighborhood.
Originally undermanaged and overgrown with invasive species, Downer Woods underwent significant restoration beginning in 1998 when it became part of the UWM Field Station. The dedicated team removed non-native shrubs, constructed formal trail systems, and worked to restore the forest to its natural state. Today, the woods feature a well-maintained grid system for research and education, making it a valuable resource for understanding local forest ecology.
