Milwaukee's downtown waterways pass the same riverbanks, bridges, and industrial remnants that shaped the city's history — and from the seat of a kayak, you're low enough to actually notice them. Milwaukee Kayak Company teams up with Milwaukee County Historical Society archivists Steve Schaffer and Michael Barera to lead small-group paddles along the Menomonee River and through downtown, pausing at significant spots while the guides explain what happened here and why it still matters.
Tours run at an easy pace designed for mixed skill levels. There's a brief paddle lesson at launch, and the group stays together throughout the 2.5-hour route. Kayak, tandem, and family tandem options are available at check-in; paddles, life jackets, and dry bags to borrow are included. The name Milwaukee comes from the Algonquian for 'gathering place by the water' — spending an afternoon on those rivers makes that translation feel earned.
Paddle thru time, learning all about our city and rivers by kayak. Join us as we paddle thru history with Milwaukee County Historical Society. Steve Schaffer, Archivist, and Michael Barera, Assistant Archivist and Digitization Specialist, from the Milwaukee County Historical Society, will guide us on our rivers and share historical insights while we learn about the famous names, buildings and bridges that made Milwaukee, MILWAUKEE. Our History Tours are paddled at a slower pace, suitable for most skill levels.
