After the flurry of spring migration, birds become quieter and more secretive as they nest and raise young. The Center’s diverse habitats located along the Lake Michigan shoreline provide plenty of nesting sites for breeding pairs. We will explore these varied habitats in search of birds concealed by the dense vegetation that summer brings. This field experience is ideal for beginners and seasoned birders alike. Build your skillset by learning how to locate and identify birds from our trails; we will focus on identification characteristics such as size, shape, color, pattern, behavior, song, and habitat preference. There will also be plenty of time to practice looking and listening for birds to get a better view without disturbing them. This outdoor hike is led by Environmental Educator and Master Naturalist instructor Cassie Rincon. She has been teaching and birding at the Center for over a decade. Bring your binoculars, favorite field guide or app, and we will meet at the Feeder Grove observation area next to the main doors of the building. This program will take place entirely outdoors.
